শান্তিচুক্তি এমন সব কার্যক্রমকে নির্দেশ করে, যা চিরস্থায়ী শান্তি লাভের শর্ত তৈরি করে। জাতিসংঘের রাষ্ট্র-রাষ্ট্রীয় সরকার ও সংস্থার মধ্যে একটি সাধারণ উপলব্ধি রয়েছে যে আন্তর্জাতিক পর্যায়ে শান্তিরক্ষীরা পোস্ট-দ্বন্দ্ব অঞ্চলে শান্তি প্রক্রিয়ার নিরীক্ষণ ও নিরীক্ষণ করে এবং তারা যে শান্তি চুক্তির প্রতিশ্রুতি বাস্তবায়নে প্রাক্তন যোদ্ধাদের সহায়তা করতে পারে গ্রহণ। এই ধরনের সহায়তায় আস্থা অর্জনের ব্যবস্থা, ক্ষমতা-ভাগাভাগি ব্যবস্থা, নির্বাচনী সহায়তা, আইনশৃঙ্খলা রক্ষাকারী এবং অর্থনৈতিক ও সামাজিক উন্নয়নসহ অনেক ধরনের ফরম পূরণ করতে পারে। তদনুসারে জাতিসংঘের শান্তিরক্ষীরা সৈন্য, পুলিশ কর্মকর্তা এবং বেসামরিক নাগরিকদের অন্তর্ভুক্ত হতে পারে। জাতিসংঘ শান্তিরক্ষা মিশন বাস্তবায়ন করার জন্য একমাত্র সংস্থা নয়। জাতিসংঘের শান্তিরক্ষা বাহিনী কসোভোতে ন্যাটো মিশন এবং সিনাই উপদ্বীপে বহুজাতিক বাহিনী ও পর্যবেক্ষক অন্তর্ভুক্ত করেছে। নন-অহিওলেন্ট শান্তিফোন একটি এনজিও যা বহুলাংশে বেসরকারী স্বেচ্ছাসেবক বা সক্রিয় কর্মীদের দ্বারা সাধারণ শান্তিরক্ষায় দক্ষতা অর্জন করে।
