একটি গ্রন্থাগার তথ্য ও সমতুল্য উত্সগুলির একটি সংগঠিত সংগ্রহ, রেফারেন্স বা ঋণের জন্য নির্ধারিত সম্প্রদায়ের কাছে অ্যাক্সেসযোগ্য। এটা উপাদান শারীরিক বা ডিজিটাল অ্যাক্সেস উপলব্ধ করা হয়, এবং একটি শারীরিক বিল্ডিং বা ঘর, বা একটি ভার্চুয়াল স্থান, বা উভয় হতে পারে। একটি গ্রন্থাগারের সংগ্রহ বই, সাময়িকী, খবরেরকাগজ, পাণ্ডুলিপি, চলচ্চিত্র, মানচিত্র, প্রিন্ট, ডকুমেন্ট, মাইক্রোফরম, সিডি, ক্যাসেট, ভিডিও ট্যাপ, ডিভিডি, ব্লু-রে ডিস্ক, ই-বই, অডিওবক্স, ডেটাবেস এবং অন্যান্য বিন্যাসগুলি অন্তর্ভুক্ত করতে পারে। গ্রন্থাগার কয়েক মিলিগ্রামের কয়েকটি বই থেকে কয়েক মিলিয়নেরও বেশি আইটেমের আকারে পরিসরযুক্ত। ল্যাটিন এবং গ্রিক ভাষায়, বইয়ের কক্ষের ধারণাটি বিবিলিথেকা এবং বিবিলিওথেকেকে দ্বারা উপস্থাপিত হয়: অনেকগুলি আধুনিক ভাষায় এই অর্থপুষ্ট গ্রন্থাগারের ডেরিভেটিভগুলি, যেমন ফরাসি বিবিলিথেকে প্রথম লাইব্রেরিতে প্রাচীনকালের লেখার আর্কাইভগুলি-সুমেরে আবিষ্কৃত কনিফর্ম লিপির ক্লে ট্যাবলেটগুলি ছিল, যা ২600 খ্রিস্টপূর্বাব্দে কিছু কিছু ডেটিং করেছিল। 5 তম শতাব্দীতে খ্রিস্টপূর্ব চতুর্থ শতাব্দীতে প্রাচীন গ্রিসে লিখিত বইগুলি তৈরি করা ব্যক্তিগত বা ব্যক্তিগত লাইব্রেরি।
