স্পেসফ্লাইটের এই প্রেক্ষাপটে, উপগ্রহটি একটি কৃত্রিম বস্তু যা ইচ্ছাকৃতভাবে কক্ষপথে স্থাপন করা হয়েছে। চন্দ্রের মতো প্রাকৃতিক উপগ্রহগুলির থেকে আলাদা করার জন্য এই ধরনের বস্তুর মাঝে মাঝে কৃত্রিম উপগ্রহ বলা হয়। পৃথিবীর প্রথম কৃত্রিম উপগ্রহ, স্পুটনিক -1, সোভিয়েত ইউনিয়নের দ্বারা 1957 সালে চালু করা হয়েছিল। তখন থেকে পৃথিবীর প্রায় হাজার হাজার উপগ্রহ কক্ষপথে প্রবেশ করেছে। কয়েকটি উপগ্রহ, বিশেষত স্পেস স্টেশনগুলি, অংশে চালু করা হয়েছে এবং কক্ষপথে একত্রিত হয়েছে। কৃত্রিম উপগ্রহগুলি 50 টিরও বেশি দেশ থেকে উৎপন্ন এবং দশটি দেশগুলির উপগ্রহ চালু করার ক্ষমতা ব্যবহার করেছে। কয়েক শত উপগ্রহ বর্তমানে চালু হচ্ছে, যেখানে হাজারো অব্যবহৃত উপগ্রহ এবং উপগ্রহের ছায়া পৃথিবীকে মহাশূন্যে ধ্বংস করে। চন্দ্র, বুধ, শুক্র, মঙ্গল, বৃহস্পতি, শনি, ভেসা, ইরোস এবং সূর্যের জন্য কয়েকটি স্থান অনুসন্ধান কক্ষপথে স্থাপন করা হয়েছে। অনেকগুলি উদ্দেশ্য জন্য উপগ্রহ ব্যবহার করা হয় প্রচলিত ধরনের সামরিক এবং বেসামরিক পৃথিবী পর্যবেক্ষণ উপগ্রহ, যোগাযোগ উপগ্রহ, ন্যাভিগেশন উপগ্রহ, আবহাওয়া উপগ্রহ, এবং গবেষণা উপগ্রহ অন্তর্ভুক্ত।
