কঠিন-রাষ্ট্রীয় পদার্থবিজ্ঞানে, কার্যের ফাংশন হচ্ছে নিকৃষ্ট তাপবিদ্যুৎ কর্ম যা কঠিন পৃষ্ঠের বাইরে অবিলম্বে ভ্যাকুয়ামের একটি বিন্দুর থেকে একটি ইলেকট্রনকে সরিয়ে ফেলা প্রয়োজন। এখানে "তাত্ক্ষণিকভাবে" অর্থ হচ্ছে পারমাণবিক স্কেলে পৃষ্ঠ থেকে চূড়ান্ত ইলেক্ট্রন অবস্থানটি দূরে অবস্থিত, কিন্তু এখনও ভ্যাকুয়ামের পার্শ্ববর্তী বৈদ্যুতিক ক্ষেত্রগুলির দ্বারা প্রভাবিত হওয়ার জন্য কঠিন থেকে খুব কাছাকাছি। কাজ ফাংশন একটি বাল্ক উপাদান একটি চরিত্রগত নয়, বরং উপাদান পৃষ্ঠ একটি সম্পত্তি।
