Mentor ditakrifkan sebagai seseorang yang memegang peranan sebagai penyelia atau penasihat kepada pelajar atau pelatih, serupa dengan tugas seorang guru atau kaunselor, tetapi lebih erat dengan anak didiknya. Mentor ini selalunya seseorang yang berpengalaman dalam bidang yang sedang diceburinya. Istilah "mentor" berasal dari nama seorang tokoh dalam kisah mitos Yunani. Mentor ialah anak kepada Alcumus dan, ketika lanjut usia, dia berkawan dengan Odysseus. Apabila melibatkan diri dalam Perang Trojan, Odysseus menyerahkan tugas menjaga istana dan anaknya Telemachus kepada Mentor. Tidak lama kemudian, Dewi Athena menziarahi Telemachus dan menyamar sebagai Mentor untuk menlindungi diri dari dijumpai sebilangan jejaka yang cuba melamar Penelope iaitu ibu kepada Telemachus. Dewi yang menyamar itu menggesa Telemachus agar membantah lamaran mereka lalu pergi berantau untuk mencari bapanya. Sekembali Odysseus ke Ithaca, Athena bertukar menjadi burung layang-layang sementara para pelamar tersebut gagal menewaskan Odysseus.
