rom. s-a păstrat sensul de „gură”; sensul de „obraz”, care a fost de asemenea propriu cuvîntului
lat., apare în
rom., în bretonul
boc’h și în berberul
abeqqa. Acest ultim sens, puțin obișnuit în est (ALR 23), pierde teren față de
obraz, în esență datorită asocierii de idei necuviinciose pe care o sugerează; în schimb, sensul de „fese” este comun și general în

buză. Der. bucălat (
var. bucălău, bucăliu, bucălăi),
adj. (fălcos, gras);
bucălai, adj. (despre oi, cu capul negru);
bucar, s. n. (opritoare de ham). Derivarea și relațiile reciproce între
bucălat și
bucălai nu sînt clare. Cihac, I, 29 îl derivă pe
bucălat de la un
lat. *bucculentus, care pare foarte artificial, și imposibil din punct de vedere fonetic. Loewe 10 și DAR admit că
bucălai „cu capul negru” a rezultat din compunerea lui
bucă „obraz” la animale și, pe de altă parte, în ciuda evidentei identități a lui
bucălat „gras” cu
bucălai „cu capul negru”. Credem că trebuie mai curînd plecat de la
var. bucălău, al cărui
f. normal,
bucălaie, s-a interpretat probabil, prin etimologie populară, ca fiind în legătură cu
laie, cu care nu are nimic a face în realitate. Cu toate acestea, persistă dificultatea derivării lui
bucălat plecîndu-se de la
bucă; cf. Spitzer,
Dacor., VI, 332, a cărui ipoteză (‹
bucca +
latus) ni se pare nepotrivită. S-ar putea avea în vedere o primă
der. pe baza
suf. -
lău (
cf. fată ›
fătălău), prin care s-a format probabil un fals participiu
bucălat.
