Abraxas war ein Wort mystischer Bedeutung im System der gnostischen Basiliden, da es dort auf den "Großen Archon", den Princeps der 365 Sphären, angewandt wurde. Die sieben Buchstaben, die ihren Namen schreiben, können jeden der sieben klassischen Planeten darstellen - Sonne, Mond, Merkur, Venus, Mars, Jupiter und Saturn. Das Wort findet sich in gnostischen Texten wie dem Heiligen Buch des Großen Unsichtbaren Geistes und erscheint auch im griechischen Magischen Papyri. Es war auf gewissen antiken Edelsteinen eingraviert, auf diesem Konto Abraxas Steine, die als Amulette oder Reize verwendet wurden. Da die anfängliche Rechtschreibung auf Steinen "Abrasax" war, entsteht die heutige Schreibweise von "Abraxas" wahrscheinlich in der Verwirrung zwischen den griechischen Buchstaben Sigma und Xi in der lateinischen Transliteration. Das Wort kann mit Abracadabra verwandt sein, obwohl andere Erklärungen existieren. Es gibt Ähnlichkeiten und Unterschiede zwischen solchen Figuren in Berichten über Basilides Lehre, alte gnostische Texte, die größeren griechisch-römischen magischen Traditionen und moderne magische und esoterische Schriften. Meinungen über Abraxas, die in den letzten Jahrhunderten behauptet wurden, sowohl ein ägyptischer Gott als auch ein Dämon zu sein.
