Es gibt im Großen und Ganzen zwei Arten von Zentromeren. "Point-Zentromer" binden an spezifische Proteine, die bestimmte DNA-Sequenzen mit hoher Effizienz erkennen. Jedes Stück DNA mit der Punkt-Zentromer-DNA-Sequenz auf ihm wird typischerweise ein Zentromer bilden, wenn es in der geeigneten Spezies vorhanden ist. Die am besten charakteristischen Zentromer sind die der Knospenhefe, Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
