Afrika ist der zweitgrößte und zweitgrößte Kontinent der Welt. Bei etwa 30,2 Millionen km² mit angrenzenden Inseln deckt sie sechs Prozent der Gesamtfläche der Erde und 20,4 Prozent der Gesamtfläche ab. Mit 1,1 Milliarden Menschen ab 2013 macht es etwa 15% der Weltbevölkerung aus. Es hat 54 voll anerkannte souveräne Staaten, neun Territorien und zwei de facto unabhängige Staaten mit begrenzter oder gar keine Anerkennung. Die Bevölkerung Afrikas ist die jüngste unter allen Kontinenten; 50% der Afrikaner sind 19 Jahre alt oder jünger. Algerien ist Afrikas größtes Land nach Gebiet, und Nigeria ist das größte von der Bevölkerung.
