Agra
Agra, die ehemalige Hauptstadt von Hindustan, ist eine Stadt am Ufer des Flusses Yamuna im nördlichen Bundesstaat Uttar Pradesh, Indien. Es ist 363 Kilometer westlich der Landeshauptstadt Lucknow, 200 Kilometer südlich der Landeshauptstadt Neu-Delhi und 125 Kilometer nördlich von Gwalior. Mit einer Bevölkerung von 1.686.976, ist es eine der bevölkerungsreichsten Städte in Uttar Pradesh und die 19. bevölkerungsreichsten in Indien. Agra kann sich auch auf den Verwaltungsbezirk beziehen, der seinen Hauptsitz in der Stadt Agra hat. Es ist ein wichtiges Reiseziel wegen seiner vielen prächtigen Mogul-Ära-Gebäude, vor allem das Tāj Mahal, Agra Fort und Fatehpūr Sikrī, von denen alle drei UNESCO-Welterbestätten sind. Agra ist auf der Golden Triangle touristischen Strecke, zusammen mit Delhi und Jaipur enthalten. Die Stadt wird im epischen Mahābhārata erwähnt, wo es heißt Agrevaṇa. Die Legende schreibt die Gründung der Stadt an Raja Badal Singh, einen Sikarwar Rajput König, dessen Fort, Badalgarh, auf oder nahe dem Gelände der heutigen Festung stand.
