Die Alewife ist eine anadromöse Heringsart, die in Nordamerika gefunden wird. Alewives erreichen eine maximale Länge von etwa 40 Zentimeter, haben aber eine durchschnittliche Länge von etwa 25 Zentimeter. Die Vorderseite des Körpers ist tief und größer als andere Fische, die in denselben Gewässern gefunden werden, und ihr allgemeiner Name soll aus dem Vergleich mit einem korpulenten weiblichen Taverneger kommen. In Atlantik Kanada ist es bekannt als die Gaspereau. Im südwestlichen Nova Scotia heißt es ein Kiack. Das Wort "gaspereau" stammt aus dem acadischen französischen Wort "gasparot", erstmals von Nicolas Denys erwähnt. William Francis Ganong, New Brunswick Biologe und Historiker, schrieb: Gaspereau oder Gasparot. Name eines gemeinsamen Salzwasserfisches von Acadia, zuerst verwendet, so weit ich kann, von Denys im Jahre 1672. Nirgends kann ich irgendeinen Hinweis auf seinen Ursprung finden. Es scheint nicht indisch zu sein. Acadians nannten zwei Flüsse nach dem Fisch, den Gaspereau in Nova Scotia und den Gaspereaux River in Neubraunschweig. In den südöstlichen USA, wenn verkauft und als Köder verwendet, wird der Fisch oft als "LY" bezeichnet. Es gibt anadromous und Binnenformen. Die Binnenform wird auch als Säbel oder Mooney bezeichnet.
