Algol
Algol, der umgangssprachlich als Dämon-Stern bekannt ist, ist ein heller Stern in der Konstellation Perseus. Es ist eine der bekanntesten Eklipse-Binärdateien, der erste Stern, der entdeckt werden soll, und auch einer der ersten Variablen, die entdeckt werden soll. Algol ist eigentlich ein Drei-Sterne-System, in dem die große und helle primäre Beta Persei A regelmäßig durch den Dimmer Beta Persei B verfinstert wird. So ist Algols Größe in der Regel nahezu konstant bei 2,1, aber regelmäßig taucht auf 3,4 alle 2 Tage, 20 Stunden und 49 Minuten während der etwa 10 Stunden langen Teilfinsternis. Es gibt auch eine sekundäre Sonnenfinsternis, wenn der helleren Stern die schwächere Sekundäre ankommt. Diese sekundäre Sonnenfinsternis kann nur photoelektrisch erkannt werden. Algol gibt seinen Namen seiner Klasse der Eklipse-Variable, bekannt als Algol-Variablen.
