Anthrazit (griechisch ἀνθρακίτης (anthrakítes), "Kohle-like", von ἄνθραξ (ánthrax), Kohle) ist eine harte, kompakte Vielfalt von Mineralkohle, die einen hohen Glanz hat. Es hat den höchsten Kohlenstoffgehalt, die geringsten Verunreinigungen und den höchsten Heizgehalt aller Kohlearten, zu denen auch Bitumenkohle und Braunkohle gehören. Anthrazit ist der am meisten metamorphotische Kohletyp (aber dennoch repräsentiert einen niedergradigen Metamorphismus), bei dem der Kohlenstoffgehalt zwischen 92,1% und 98% liegt. Der Begriff wird auf die Sorten von Kohle angewendet, die bei der Erwärmung unter ihrem Zündpunkt keine Gewässer oder andere Kohlenwasserstoffdämpfe abgeben. Anthrazit entzündet sich schwer und brennt mit einer kurzen, blauen und rauchfreien Flamme. Anthrazit ist in Standard-Klasse, die vor allem in der Stromerzeugung verwendet wird, und hochgradige (HG) und Ultra-High-Grade (UHG), deren wichtigsten Verwendungen sind in der metallurgischen Sektor kategorisiert. Anthrazit macht etwa 1% der weltweiten Kohle-Reserven aus und wird in nur wenigen Ländern auf der ganzen Welt abgebaut. China erklärt die Mehrheit der globalen Produktion; Andere Produzenten sind Russland, Ukraine, Nordkorea, Vietnam, Großbritannien, Australien und die USA.
