Die F-Region enthält ionisierte Gase in einer Höhe von etwa 150-800 km über dem Meeresspiegel, indem sie sie in die thermosphäre der Erde, eine heiße Region in der oberen Atmosphäre und auch in die Heterosphäre, wo die chemische Zusammensetzung mit der Höhe variiert. Im Allgemeinen hat die F-Region die höchste Konzentration an freien Elektronen und Ionen überall in der Atmosphäre. Es kann davon ausgegangen werden, dass sie aus zwei Schichten besteht, die F1- und F2-Schichten. Die F-Region liegt direkt oberhalb der E-Region und unterhalb der Protonosphäre. Es wirkt als zuverlässiger Reflektor von Funksignalen, da er nicht von atmosphärischen Bedingungen beeinflusst wird, obwohl seine ionische Zusammensetzung mit dem Sonnenfleckzyklus variiert. Es reflektiert normale Einfallfrequenzen bei oder unterhalb der kritischen Frequenz und nimmt teilweise Wellen mit höherer Frequenz auf.
