Aralsee
Das Aralsee war ein See zwischen Kasachstan im Norden und Karakalpakstan, einer autonomen Region Usbekistans, im Süden. Der Name ist grob übersetzt als "Meer der Inseln", bezogen auf etwa 1.534 Inseln, die einst seine Gewässer punktierten; Im alttürkischen aral bedeutet "insel" und "dickicht". Früher einer der vier größten Seen der Welt mit einer Fläche von 68.000 km2, hat das Aral Meer seit den sechziger Jahren stetig geschrumpft, nachdem die Flüsse, die ihn gefüttert haben, von sowjetischen Bewässerungsprojekten umgeleitet wurden. Im Jahr 2007 war sie auf 10% ihrer ursprünglichen Größe zurückgegangen und trennte sich in vier Seen - das Nord-Aral-Meer, die östlichen und westlichen Becken des einst weit größeren Süd-Aral-Sees und einen kleineren See zwischen den Nord- und Süd-Aral-Meeren. Bis 2009 war der südöstliche See verschwunden, und der südwestliche See hatte sich im äußersten Westen des ehemaligen Südmeeres zu einem dünnen Streifen zurückgezogen. Die maximale Tiefe des Nord-Aral-Sees beträgt 42 m. Das Schrumpfen des Aralsees wurde "einer der schlimmsten Umweltkatastrophen des Planeten" genannt.
