Archivar
Ein Archivar ist ein Informationspersonal, der die Kontrolle über sich behält, sammelt, organisiert, bewahrt, unterhält und den Zugang zu Datensätzen und Archiven bietet, die einen langfristigen Wert haben. Die Aufzeichnungen, die von einem Archivar gehalten werden, können irgendeine Form von Medien sein. Als Richard Pearce-Moses schrieb: "Archivisten halten Aufzeichnungen, die dauerhaften Wert als zuverlässige Erinnerungen an die Vergangenheit haben, und sie helfen den Menschen, die Informationen zu finden und zu verstehen, die sie in diesen Aufzeichnungen benötigen." Bestimmen, welche Datensätze dauerhaften Wert haben kann herausfordernd sein. Die Archivisten müssen auch Datensätze auswählen, die ausreichen, um die Kosten der Lagerung und der Erhaltung zu rechtfertigen, sowie die arbeitsintensiven Kosten der Anordnung, der Beschreibung und des Referenzdienstes. Die Theorie und die gelehrte Arbeit, die Archive-Praktiken untermauert, heißt Archivwissenschaft. Obwohl beide mit der Verwaltung von Informationen beschäftigt sind, ist die Besetzung des Archivars ganz anders als die des Bibliothekars. Die beiden Berufe haben getrennte Trainingskurse, halten sich an getrennte und eindeutige Prinzipien und werden durch separate Berufsorganisationen vertreten.
