Arkose
Arkose / ɑrkoʊz / ist ein detritaler Sedimentgestein, speziell eine Art Sandstein mit mindestens 25% Feldspat. Arkosic Sand ist Sand, der ähnlich reich an Feldspat ist, und damit der potentielle Vorläufer der Arkose. Quarz ist gewöhnlich die dominierende mineralische Komponente, und irgendein Glimmer ist oft vorhanden. Neben dem Mineralgehalt können auch Steinfragmente eine wesentliche Komponente sein. Arkose enthält gewöhnlich kleine Mengen an Calcit-Zement, die es bewirkt, daß man sich in verdünnter Salzsäure leicht "fizz" macht. Manchmal enthält der Zement auch Eisenoxid. Arkose ist typisch grau bis rötlich in der Farbe. Die Sandkörner, die eine Arkose bilden, können von fein bis sehr grob reichen, neigen aber zum gröberen Ende der Skala. Fossilien sind selten in arkose, aufgrund der depositionalen Prozesse, die es bilden, obwohl Bettwäsche ist häufig sichtbar.
