In der organischen Chemie ist die Aromatizität eine chemische Eigenschaft, die die Art und Weise beschreibt, in der ein konjugierter Ring von ungesättigten Bindungen, einsamen Paaren oder leeren Orbitalen eine Stabilisierung aufweist, die stärker ist, als man durch die Stabilisierung der Konjugation allein erwarten würde. Die früheste Verwendung des Begriffs war in einem Artikel von August Wilhelm Hofmann im Jahre 1855. Es gibt keinen allgemeinen Zusammenhang zwischen der Aromatizität als chemische Eigenschaft und den olfaktorischen Eigenschaften solcher Verbindungen. Die Aromatizität kann auch als eine Manifestation der zyklischen Delokalisierung und der Resonanz angesehen werden. Dies ist gewöhnlich der Fall, weil Elektronen frei sind, um kreisförmige Anordnungen von Atomen zu radeln, die abwechselnd ein- und zweifach miteinander verbunden sind. Diese Bindungen können als Hybrid aus einer Einfachbindung und einer Doppelbindung gesehen werden, wobei jede Bindung im Ring mit jedem anderen identisch ist. Dieses allgemein gesehene Modell der aromatischen Ringe, nämlich die Idee, daß Benzol aus einem sechsgliedrigen Kohlenstoffring mit abwechselnden Einzel- und Doppelbindungen gebildet wurde, wurde von Kekulé entwickelt. Das Modell für Benzol besteht aus zwei Resonanzformen, die den Doppel- und Einzelbindungen entsprechen, die überlagern, um sechs eineinhalb Bündel zu ergeben.

Aromaticity can also be considered a manifestation of cyclic delocalization and of resonance. This is usually considered to be because electrons are free to cycle around circular arrangements of atoms that are alternately single- and double-bonded to one another. These bonds may be seen as a hybrid of a single bond and a double bond, each bond in the ring identical to every other. This commonly seen model of aromatic rings, namely the idea that benzene was formed from a six-membered carbon ring with alternating single and double bonds, was developed by Kekulé. The model for benzene consists of two resonance forms, which corresponds to the double and single bonds superimposing to give rise to six one-and-a-half bonds.
