Vereinigung ist die Idee, dass mentale Prozesse durch die Assoziation eines geistigen Zustands mit seinen Nachfolgestaaten operieren. Die Idee wird zuerst in Platon und Aristoteles aufgenommen, besonders im Hinblick auf die Nachfolge von Erinnerungen. Die Mitglieder der vorwiegend britischen "Associationist School", darunter John Locke, David Hume, David Hartley, James Mill, John Stuart Mill, Alexander Bain und Ivan Pavlov, behaupten, dass das Prinzip auf alle oder die meisten mentalen Prozesse angewendet wird. Spätere Mitglieder der Schule entwickelten sehr spezifische Prinzipien, die erarbeiteten, wie Assoziationen funktionierten und sogar ein physiologischer Mechanismus, der keine Ähnlichkeit mit der modernen Neurophysiologie hatte. Einige der Ideen der Vereinigen Schule erwarteten die Prinzipien der Konditionierung und ihre Verwendung in der Verhaltenspsychologie. In der frühen Geschichte des Sozialismus war der Assoziationsismus ein Begriff, der von den Nachfolgern der utopischen Theorien jener Denker des frühen 19. Jahrhunderts verwendet wurde, wie Robert Owen, Claude Henri de Saint-Simon und Charles Fourier, um ihre Überzeugungen zu beschreiben.
