Atlantis
Atlantis ist der Name einer fiktiven Insel, die in einer Allegorie über die Hybris der Nationen in Platons Werken Timaeus und Critias erwähnt wird, wo sie die antagonistische Seemacht repräsentiert, die "Altes Athen", die pseudo-historische Verkörperung des idealen Zustandes Platons, belagert. Der allegorische Aspekt von Atlantis wurde in utopischen Werken mehrerer Renaissance-Schriftsteller aufgenommen, wie z. B. Bacons New Atlantis und More Utopia. Auf der anderen Seite interpretierten die Amateur-Gelehrten des 19. Jahrhunderts Platons Darstellung als historische Tradition, vor allem in Donnellys Atlantis: Die antediluvische Welt.
