Atomismus
Atomismus ist eine natürliche Philosophie, die sich in mehreren alten Traditionen entwickelt hat. Die Atomisten theoretisierten, dass die Natur aus zwei Grundprinzipien besteht: Atom und Leere. Im Gegensatz zu ihrem modernen wissenschaftlichen Namensvetter in der Atomtheorie kommen philosophische Atome in eine unendliche Vielfalt von Formen und Größen, jede unzerstörbare, unveränderliche und umgeben von einer Leere, wo sie mit den anderen kollidieren oder zusammenhängen zusammen einen Cluster. Cluster unterschiedlicher Formen, Arrangements und Positionen führen zu den verschiedenen makroskopischen Substanzen in der Welt. Verweise auf das Konzept des Atomismus und seiner Atome finden sich im alten Indien und dem antiken Griechenland. In Indien können die Jain-, Ajivika- und Carvaka-Schulen des Atomismus bis ins 6. Jahrhundert v.Chr. Zurückreichen. Die Nyaya- und Vaisheshika-Schulen entwickelten später Theorien darüber, wie sich Atome zu komplexeren Objekten vereinen. Im Westen entstand der Atomismus im 5. Jh. V.Chr. Mit Leucippus und Demokrit. Ob die indische Kultur Griechisch oder umgekehrt beeinflusst hat oder ob sie sich selbständig entwickelt haben, ist eine Frage des Streits.
