Audiogramme werden mit Häufigkeit in Hertz auf der horizontalen Achse, am häufigsten auf einer logarithmischen Skala und einer linearen dBHL-Skala auf der vertikalen Achse gesetzt. Für den Menschen liegt das normale Gehör zwischen -10 dB und 15 dB, obwohl 0 dB von 250 Hz bis 8 kHz als "durchschnittliches" normales Gehör gilt. Hörschwellen von Menschen und anderen Säugetieren können durch Verhaltens-Hörversuche oder physiologische Tests gefunden werden. Ein Audiogramm kann mit einem Verhaltenstest mit dem Namen Audiometrie gewonnen werden. Für den Menschen beinhaltet der Test verschiedene Töne, die mit einer bestimmten Frequenz und Intensität dargestellt werden.
