Im Hinduismus ist ein avatar / ævətɑr / eine absichtliche Abstammung einer Gottheit zur Erde oder eines Abstiegs des Höchsten Wesens und wird meist als "Inkarnation" ins Englische übersetzt, aber genauer als "Aussehen" oder "Manifestation". Das Phänomen eines Avatars wird im Hinduismus, Ayyavazhi und Sikhismus beobachtet. Avatar gilt als einer der Grundprinzipien des Hinduismus. Der Begriff ist am häufigsten mit Vishnu verbunden, obwohl es auch gekommen ist, mit anderen Gottheiten verbunden zu sein. Verschiedene Listen von Avisharen von Vishnu erscheinen in hinduistischen Schriften, darunter die zehn Dashavatara der Garuda Purana und die zweiundzwanzig Avatare in der Bhagavata Purana, obwohl letztere fügt hinzu, dass die Inkarnationen von Vishnu unzählig sind. Die Avatare von Vishnu sind eine Hauptkomponente des Vaishnavismus. Ein früherer Hinweis auf Avatar und Avatar Doktrin, ist in der Bhagavad Gita.
