Der Begriff stammt aus dem Namen, der an eine billige Tagesrückkehr Eisenbahn-Ticket gegeben wurde, nachdem die Preisgestaltung nach Reisezeit auf dem britischen Eisenbahnnetz in den 1960er Jahren eingeführt wurde. Es wird auch in Bezug auf eine Fußballmannschaft verwendet, die ein Spiel weg von ihrem Heimatland spielt, und die Fans, die die Reise zum Spiel machen, beziehen sich darauf, dass es ein "Awayday" ist, weil sie ihren Tag um das weg Fußballspiel planen .
