Axon
Ein Axon auch als Nervenfaser bekannt; Ist eine lange, schlanke Projektion einer Nervenzelle oder eines Neurons, die typischerweise elektrische Impulse aus dem Zellkörper des Neurons herausführt. Die Funktion des Axons besteht darin, Informationen an verschiedene Neuronen, Muskeln und Drüsen zu übertragen. In gewissen sensorischen Neuronen, wie z. B. bei Berührung und Wärme, fährt der elektrische Impuls entlang eines Axons von der Peripherie zum Zellkörper und vom Zellkörper zum Rückenmark entlang eines anderen Zweiges desselben Axons. Axon-Dysfunktion verursacht viele erbliche und erworbene neurologische Störungen, die sowohl die peripheren als auch die zentralen Neuronen beeinflussen können. Ein Axon ist eines von zwei Arten von protoplasmatischen Vorsprüngen, die aus dem Zellkörper eines Neurons extrudieren, wobei der andere Typ Dendriten ist. Axone unterscheiden sich von dendriten durch mehrere Merkmale, einschließlich Form, Länge und Funktion. Alle diese Regeln haben jedoch Ausnahmen. Einige Arten von Neuronen haben kein Axon und übertragen Signale von ihren Dendriten. Kein Neuron hat jemals mehr als einen Axon; Bei Invertebraten wie Insekten oder Blutegel besteht das Axon aber manchmal aus mehreren Regionen, die mehr oder weniger unabhängig voneinander funktionieren.
