Basis (Chemie)
In der Chemie ist eine Basis eine Substanz, die in wässriger Lösung rutschig ist, schmeckt bitter, verändert die Farbe der Indikatoren (z. B. rotes Lackmuspapier blau), reagiert mit Säuren zu Salzen und fördert gewisse chemische Reaktionen (Basenkatalyse). Beispiele für Basen sind die Hydroxide der Alkali- und Erdalkalimetalle (NaOH, Ca (OH) 2 usw.). Solche Substanzen erzeugen in wässrigen Lösungen Hydroxidionen (OH-) und werden daher als Arrhenius-Basen klassifiziert. Für eine Substanz, die als Arrhenius-Basis eingestuft werden soll, muß sie Hydroxid-Ionen in Lösung herstellen - um dies zu tun, glaubte Arrhenius, daß die Base in der Formel Hydroxid enthalten muß. Damit ist das Arrhenius-Modell begrenzt, da es nicht die grundlegenden Eigenschaften von wässrigen Lösungen von Ammoniak (NH3) oder seinen organischen Derivaten (Aminen) erklären kann. In der allgemeineren Brønsted-Lowry-Säure-Base-Theorie ist eine Base eine Substanz, die Wasserstoffionen (H +) annehmen kann - sonst bekannt als Protonen. Im Lewis-Modell ist eine Base ein Elektronenpaar-Spender. In Wasser, durch Verändern des Selbstionisierungsgleichgewichts, ergeben Basen Lösungen mit einer Wasserstoffionenaktivität, die niedriger ist als die von reinem Wasser, d.h. einen pH-Wert von mehr als 7.
