Basidium
Ein Basidium ist eine mikroskopische, sporenbildende Struktur, die auf dem Hymenophor von Fruchtkörpern von Basidiomycetenpilzen gefunden wird. Die Anwesenheit von Basidien ist eines der Hauptmerkmale der Basidiomycota. Ein Basidium trägt gewöhnlich vier sexuelle Sporen, die Basidiosporen genannt werden; Gelegentlich kann die Zahl zwei oder sogar acht sein. In einem typischen Basidium wird jede Basidiospore an der Spitze eines schmalen Stifts oder Horns, der ein Sterigma genannt wird, getragen und wird bei der Reife gewaltsam entlassen. Das Wort Basidium bedeutet wörtlich wenig Sockel, von der Art, wie das Basidium die Sporen unterstützt. Doch einige Biologen deuten darauf hin, dass die Struktur eher einem Club ähnelt. Ein unreifes Basidium ist als Basidiole bekannt.
