Xerophyllum tenax
Xerophyllum tenax ist eine grasartige Staude in der Familie Melanthiaceae, die eng mit Lilien verwandt ist. Es ist bekannt durch ein paar häufige Namen, darunter Bärengras, Squaw Gras, Seifengras, Quip-Quip und indischen Korb Gras. Es kann bis 15-150 cm in der Höhe wachsen und wächst in Trauben mit den Blättern umwickelt und erstreckt sich von einem kleinen Stamm am Boden. Die Blätter sind 30-100 cm lang und 2-6 mm breit, stumpf olivgrün mit gezahnten Kanten. Die leicht duftenden weißen Blüten entstehen aus einem hohen Stiel, der von der Basis schraubt. Wenn die Blumen in voller Blüte sind, sind sie fest an der Spitze des Stiels wie ein aufrechter Verein gepackt. Die Pflanze befindet sich vorwiegend im westlichen Nordamerika von British Columbia südlich nach Kalifornien und nach Osten nach Wyoming, in subalpinen Wiesen und Küstengebirgen und auch auf niedrigem Boden im kalifornischen Nebelgürtel. Es ist üblich auf der Olympischen Halbinsel und in den Cascades, nördlichen Sierra Nevada und Rockies. X. tenax ist ein wichtiger Teil der Feuerökologie der Regionen, in denen es gebürtig ist. Es hat Rhizome, die das Feuer überleben, das tot ist und die Materie von der Oberfläche des Bodens stirbt.
