Bentonit
Bentonit ist ein absorbierendes Aluminium-Phyllosilikat, im wesentlichen unreiner Ton, der hauptsächlich aus Montmorillonit besteht. Der saugfähige Ton erhielt den Namen Bentonit von Wilbur C. Ritter im Jahre 1898, nach dem Kreide-Benton-Schiefer in der Nähe von Rock River, Wyoming. Es gibt verschiedene Arten von Bentonit, die jeweils nach dem jeweiligen dominanten Element wie Kalium, Natrium, Kalzium und Aluminium benannt sind. Experten diskutieren eine Reihe von Nomenklaturproblemen mit der Klassifizierung von Bentonit-Tonen. Bentonit bildet sich gewöhnlich aus der Verwitterung von Vulkanasche, meist in Gegenwart von Wasser. Andere gemeinsame Tonarten und manchmal dominant sind Montmorillonit und Kaolinit. Kaolinit-dominierte Tone werden üblicherweise als tonsteine bezeichnet und sind typischerweise mit Kohle assoziiert.
