Enzyme / ɛnzaɪmz / sind große biologische Moleküle verantwortlich für die Tausende von Stoffwechselprozessen, die das Leben zu halten. Sie sind hochselektive Katalysatoren, die sowohl die Geschwindigkeit als auch die Spezifität der metabolischen Reaktionen stark beschleunigen, von der Verdauung der Nahrung bis zur Synthese von DNA. Die meisten Enzyme sind Proteine, obwohl einige katalytische RNA-Moleküle identifiziert wurden. Enzyme nehmen eine spezifische dreidimensionale Struktur an und können organische und anorganische Cofaktoren verwenden, um die Katalyse zu unterstützen. In enzymatischen Reaktionen werden die Moleküle am Anfang des Prozesses, genannt Substrate, in verschiedene Moleküle umgewandelt, genannt Produkte. Fast alle chemischen Reaktionen in einer biologischen Zelle benötigen Enzyme, um bei Raten zu kommen, die für das Leben ausreichend sind. Da Enzyme selektiv für ihre Substrate sind und nur wenige Reaktionen aus vielen Möglichkeiten beschleunigen, bestimmt der Satz von Enzymen, die in einer Zelle hergestellt werden, welche metabolischen Wege in dieser Zelle auftreten. Wie alle Katalysatoren arbeiten Enzyme, indem sie die Aktivierungsenergie für eine Reaktion senken und damit die Reaktionsgeschwindigkeit drastisch erhöhen.
