Großer Bitterer See
Der Große Bittersee ist ein Salzwasser See, der Teil des Suezkanals ist. Es ist mit dem kleinen bitteren See verbunden, durch den auch der Kanal läuft. Bevor der Kanal gebaut wurde, wurde ihr Standort von trockenen Salztälern besetzt. Gemeinsam haben die Bitterseen eine Fläche von ca. 250 km². Der Kanal führt auch durch den See Manzala und den See Timsah, nördlich der Bitteren Seen. Da der Kanal keine Schlösser hat, fließt Meerwasser aus dem Mittelmeer und dem Roten Meer frei in den See. Im Allgemeinen nördlich der Seen kehrt der Strom saisonal zurück, nördlich im Winter und im Süden im Sommer. Südlich der Seen ist die Strömung die Flut, die mit den Gezeiten im Roten Meer umgekehrt ist. Fische können im Allgemeinen in nördlicher Richtung durch den Kanal und die Seen in einer sogenannten Lessepsischen Migration wandern. Auf diese Weise sind einige Arten des Roten Meeres gekommen, um das östliche Mittelmeer zu besiedeln. Im späteren Teil des Zweiten Weltkrieges wurde der See benutzt, um italienische Kriegsschiffe zu führen, die den Alliierten, einschließlich der Schlachtschiffe Vittorio Veneto und Italia, übergeben hatten.
