Ein schwarzer Körper im thermischen Gleichgewicht hat zwei bemerkenswerte Eigenschaften: ▪ Es ist ein idealer Emitter: Bei jeder Frequenz emittiert er so viel Energie wie oder mehr Energie als jeder andere Körper bei der gleichen Temperatur. ▪ Es ist ein diffuser Emitter: Die Energie wird isotrop, unabhängig von der Richtung abgestrahlt. Eine ungefähre Verwirklichung einer schwarzen Oberfläche ist ein Loch in der Wand eines großen Gehäuses. Jedes Licht, das in das Loch eindringt, wird auf unbestimmte Zeit reflektiert oder innen absorbiert und es ist unwahrscheinlich, dass es wieder auftaucht, was das Loch zu einem nahezu perfekten Absorber macht.
