Es liegt im Zentrum der Grafschaft südwestlich von Bodmin Moor. Das Ausmaß der Zivilgemeinde entspricht ziemlich genau dem der Stadt, ist also meist städtisch. Es grenzt im Osten an die Pfarrei Cardinham, im Südosten von der Lanhydrock-Gemeinde, im Südwesten und Westen an die Gemeinde Lanivet und im Norden an die Kirchengemeinde von Helland. Bodmin hat eine Bevölkerung von 12.778. Es war früher die Kreisstadt Cornwall, bis die Krongerichte nach Truro zogen, das auch das Verwaltungszentrum ist. Bodmin war in der administrativen North Cornwall District bis lokale Regierung Reorganisation im Jahr 2009 abgeschafft den Bezirk. Die Stadt ist Teil des Nord-Cornwall-Wahlkreises, der von Dan Rogerson MP vertreten wird. Bodmin Stadtrat besteht aus 16 Ratsmitgliedern, die gewählt werden, um eine Amtszeit von vier Jahren zu dienen.
