Bor
Bor ist ein chemisches Element mit Symbol B und Atomzahl 5. Da Bor vollständig durch kosmische Strahlspallation und nicht durch stellaren Nukleosynthese produziert wird, ist es ein niederwertiges Element sowohl im Sonnensystem als auch in der Erdkruste. Bor ist auf der Erde durch die Wasserlöslichkeit seiner allgemeineren natürlich vorkommenden Verbindungen, der Boratmineralien, konzentriert. Diese werden industriell als Evaporiten, wie Borax und Kernit, abgebaut. Chemisch unkombiniertes Bor, das als Metalloid klassifiziert wird, findet sich in kleinen Mengen in Meteoroiden, findet sich aber natürlich nicht auf der Erde. Industriell wird sehr reines Bor mit Schwierigkeiten hergestellt, da Bor dazu neigt, feuerfeste Materialien zu bilden, die geringe Mengen an Kohlenstoff oder anderen Elementen enthalten. Es gibt mehrere Allotrope von Bor: amorphes Bor ist ein braunes Pulver, und kristallines Bor ist schwarz, extrem hart und ein schlechter Leiter bei Raumtemperatur. Elementar-Bor wird als Dotierstoff in der Halbleiterindustrie eingesetzt. Die wichtigsten industriellen Einsatz von Borverbindungen sind in Natriumperborat-Bleichmittel und Borosilikatglas, das sie als Pyrex bezeichnet, mit größerer Festigkeit und Bruchfestigkeit als gewöhnliches Natronkalkglas.
