Benjamin Britten
Edward Benjamin Britten, Baron Britten, OM, CH war ein englischer Komponist, Dirigent und Pianist. Er war eine zentrale Figur der britischen klassischen Musik des 20. Jahrhunderts mit einer Reihe von Werken, darunter Opern, andere Vokalmusik, Orchester- und Kammermusik. Zu seinen bekanntesten Werken gehören die Oper Peter Grimes, das Kriegs Requiem und das Orchester-Schauplatz Der Jugend-Führer des Orchesters. In Suffolk, dem Sohn eines Zahnarztes, geboren, zeigte Britten schon früh ein Talent. Er studierte an der Royal College of Music in London und privat mit dem Komponisten Frank Bridge. Britten kam erstmals mit der a cappella Chorarbeit auf die Aufmerksamkeit. Ein Junge wurde 1934 geboren. Mit der Premiere von Peter Grimes 1945 sprang er auf internationalen Ruhm. In den nächsten 28 Jahren schrieb er 14 weitere Opern und etablierte sich als einer der führenden Komponisten des 20. Jahrhunderts im Genre. Neben den großartigen Opern für Sadler's Wells und Covent Garden schrieb er "Kammeropern" für kleine Kräfte, die für die Leistung in Schauplätzen von bescheidener Größe geeignet sind.
