Gaius Julius Caesar war ein römischer General, Staatsmann, Konsul und bemerkenswerter Autor der lateinischen Prosa. Caesar wurde der erste römische General, der beide überquerte, als er eine Brücke über den Rhein baute und die erste Invasion in Großbritannien führte. Diese Errungenschaften gewährten ihm eine unübertroffene militärische Macht und drohten, den Stand von Pompeius zu verfinstern, der sich nach dem Tod von Crassus im Jahre 53 v.Chr. Mit dem Senat neu ausgerichtet hatte. Mit den gallischen Kriegen schloß der Senat, daß Cäsar von seinem Militärkommando zurückkehrte und nach Rom zurückkehrte.
