Carnitin
Carnitin ist eine quaternäre Ammoniumverbindung, die aus den Aminosäuren Lysin und Methionin biosynthetisiert ist. In lebenden Zellen ist es für den Transport von Fettsäuren aus dem intermembranen Raum in den Mitochondrien, in die mitochondriale Matrix während des Abbruchs von Lipiden für die Erzeugung von metabolischer Energie erforderlich. Es ist weithin als Nahrungsergänzungsmittel erhältlich. Carnitin wurde ursprünglich als Wachstumsfaktor für Mehlwürmer und markiertes Vitamin BT gefunden, obwohl Carnitin kein richtiges Vitamin ist. Carnitin besteht in zwei Stereoisomeren: seine biologisch aktive Form ist L-Carnitin, während sein Enantiomer D-Carnitin biologisch inaktiv ist.
