Kartesisches Koordinatensystem
Ein kartesisches Koordinatensystem ist ein Koordinatensystem, das jeden Punkt eindeutig in einer Ebene durch ein Paar von numerischen Koordinaten spezifiziert, die die unterschriebenen Abstände von dem Punkt zu zwei festen senkrecht gerichteten Linien sind, gemessen in derselben Längeneinheit. Jede Bezugslinie wird eine Koordinatenachse oder nur eine Achse des Systems genannt, und der Punkt, an dem sie sich treffen, ist ihr Ursprung, gewöhnlich bei geordnetem Paar. Die Koordinaten können auch als die Positionen der senkrechten Projektionen des Punktes auf die beiden Achsen definiert werden, ausgedrückt als signierte Abstände vom Ursprung. Man kann das gleiche Prinzip verwenden, um die Position eines beliebigen Punktes im dreidimensionalen Raum durch drei kartesische Koordinaten zu spezifizieren, seine signierten Abstände zu drei zueinander senkrechten Ebenen. Im Allgemeinen geben n kartesische Koordinaten den Punkt in einem n-dimensionalen euklidischen Raum für jede Dimension n an. Diese Koordinaten sind gleich, bis zu Zeichen, zu Abständen vom Punkt zu n zueinander senkrechten Hyperplanen.
