Der Cartesianismus ist der Name der philosophischen Lehre von René Descartes. Descartes wird oft als der erste Denker angesehen, um den Gebrauch der Vernunft zur Entwicklung der Naturwissenschaften zu betonen. Für ihn war die Philosophie ein Denksystem, das alles Wissen verkörperte und es so ausdrückte: Die Cartesianer betrachten den Geist als ganz getrennt vom körperlichen Körper. Empfindung und die Wahrnehmung der Wirklichkeit werden als die Quelle der Unwahrheit und Illusionen angesehen, mit den einzigen zuverlässigen Wahrheiten, die in der Existenz eines metaphysischen Geistes zu haben sind. Ein solcher Geist kann vielleicht mit einem physischen Körper interagieren, aber er existiert nicht im Körper, noch in der gleichen physischen Ebene wie der Körper. Im Allgemeinen teilt der kartesianische Gedanke die Welt in drei Existenzbereiche: ▪ die von dem physischen Körper bewohnt, die von dem Geist bewohnt und von Gott bewohnt ist.
