Cenozoikum
Die cenozoische Ära ist die aktuelle und jüngste der drei phanerozoischen geologischen Ära, nach der mesozoischen Ära und deckt die Zeit von 66 Millionen Jahren bis zur Gegenwart. Das Cenozoikum ist auch bekannt als das Alter der Säugetiere, weil das Aussterben von vielen Gruppen erlaubt Säugetiere stark zu diversifizieren. Frühe im Cenozoikum, nach dem K-Pg-Ereignis, wurde der Planet von einer relativ kleinen Fauna dominiert, darunter kleine Säugetiere, Vögel, Reptilien und Amphibien. Aus einer geologischen Perspektive dauert es nicht lange, bis Säugetiere und Vögel in der Abwesenheit der großen Reptilien, die während des Mesozoikers dominiert wurden, stark diversifizieren. Einige Vögel wurden größer als der durchschnittliche Mensch. Diese Gruppe wurde bekannt als die "Terrorvögel" und waren furchtbare Raubtiere. Säugetiere kamen, um fast jede verfügbare Nische zu besetzen, und einige wuchsen auch sehr groß und erreichten Größen, die in den meisten heutigen terrestrischen Säugetieren nicht gesehen wurden. Klimawandel hatte die Erde eine trocknende und kühlende Tendenz begonnen, die in den Gletschern der pleistozänen Epoche gipfelte und teilweise durch das Paläozän-Eozän-Thermalmaximum kompensiert wurde.
