Cephalochordate
Cephalochordata ist ein chordatisches Subphylum, das durch die Anwesenheit eines Notochordes definiert ist, das während des ganzen Lebens andauert. Es ist in den modernen Ozeanen durch die Lanzetten vertreten. Zusammen mit seinem Schwester Phylum Urochordata, kann Cephalochordata als zu den Taxon Protochordata gehören eingestuft werden. Die Eigenschaften von Cephalochordata sind, dass sie marine Tiere sind, segmentiert, und dass sie langgestreckte Körper mit einem Notochord besitzen, das die Länge des Körpers und des Zirkums um den Mund um Nahrung erweitert erstreckt. In cephalochordata reicht das Notochord von Kopf zu Schwanz und es bleibt während ihres ganzen Lebens bestehen. Die Mitglieder dieses Subphilums sind sehr klein und haben keine harten Teile, so dass ihre Fossilien schwer zu finden sind. Versteinerte Arten wurden in sehr alten Felsen gefunden, die Wirbeltiere vorhersagen. Es gibt berühmten fossilen Schiefer von der Mitte Cambrian Burgess Schiefer von British Columbia, die Pikaia Fossilien gegeben hat. Vor kurzem wurde in Südchina ein anderes Cephalochordat-Fossil gefunden. Es datiert auf die frühe Kambriumperiode und ist das früheste bekannte Fossil der cephalochordate Linie. Sie haben zahlreiche Kiemenschlitze und haben getrennte Geschlechter.
