Chapbook
Ein chapbook ist eine frühe Art der populären Literatur, die im frühen modernen Europa gedruckt wird. Die Tradition der Kapellen entstand im 16. Jahrhundert, sobald gedruckte Bücher erschwinglich wurden und im 17. und 18. Jahrhundert auf ihre Höhe stiegen. Viele verschiedene Arten von Eintagsfliegen, Volks- oder Volksliteratur wurden als Chapbooks veröffentlicht, wie zB Broschüren, politische und religiöse Traktate, Kinderreime, Poesie, Volksmärchen, Kinderliteratur und Almanache. Wenn Abbildungen in chapbooks enthalten sind, werden sie als populäre Drucke betrachtet. Der Begriff Chapbook für diese Art von Literatur wurde im 19. Jahrhundert geprägt. Die entsprechenden französischen und deutschen Begriffe sind Bibliothèque bleue und Volksbuch. Der Begriff Chapbook ist auch für heutige Publikationen, in der Regel Poesie, von bis zu etwa 40 Seiten, von Low-Cost-Produktionen bis hin zu teuren, fein produzierten Editionen.
