Cherenkov-Strahlung
Cherenkov-Strahlung, auch bekannt als Vavilov-Cherenkov-Strahlung, ist elektromagnetische Strahlung, die emittiert wird, wenn ein geladenes Teilchen ein dielektrisches Medium mit einer Geschwindigkeit überschreitet, die größer ist als die Phasengeschwindigkeit des Lichts in diesem Medium. Das charakteristische blaue Glühen eines Unterwasserkernreaktors ist auf Cherenkov-Strahlung zurückzuführen. Es ist nach dem sowjetischen Wissenschaftler Pavel Aleksejewitsch Cherenkov, dem Nobelpreisträger von 1958 benannt, der als erster ihn experimentell entdeckte. Eine Theorie dieser Wirkung wurde später im Rahmen von Einsteins spezieller Relativitätstheorie von Igor Tamm und Ilya Frank entwickelt, der auch den Nobelpreis teilte. Cherenkov-Strahlung wurde theoretisch von der englischen Polymath Oliver Heaviside in Papieren in 1888-1889 veröffentlicht vorhergesagt.
