In der Kryptographie ist eine Chiffre ein Algorithmus zur Durchführung von Verschlüsselung oder Entschlüsselung - eine Reihe von klar definierten Schritten, die als Prozedur verfolgt werden können. Ein alternativer, weniger allgemeiner Begriff ist Verschlüsselung. Um zu verschlüsseln oder zu verschlüsseln ist, um Informationen aus Klartext in Chiffre oder Code umzuwandeln. Zum Beispiel könnte "UQJHSE" der Code für "Weiter zu den folgenden Koordinaten" sein. Bei der Verwendung einer Chiffre wird die ursprüngliche Information als Klartext und die verschlüsselte Form als Chiffretext bezeichnet.
