In der juristischen Forschung ist ein Zitator ein Zitat-Index der gesetzlichen Ressourcen, einer der bekanntesten, von denen in den Vereinigten Staaten ist Shepard's Zitate. Angesichts eines Verweises auf eine Rechtsentscheidung erlaubt ein Zitator dem Forscher, neuere Dokumente zu finden, die das Originaldokument zitieren und damit die Gerichtsgeschichte von Fällen und Satzungen rekonstruieren. Die Verwendung eines Zitators auf diese Weise wird umgangssprachlich als "Shepardizing" bezeichnet.
