Der Begriff "Code" bezieht sich auf die im Flugplan verwendete Kennung, in der Regel die Zwei-Zeichen-IATA-Fluggesellschaft Bezeichner Code und Flugnummer. So könnte XX123, Flug 123, der von der Fluggesellschaft XX betrieben wird, auch von der Fluggesellschaft YY als YY456 und von ZZ als ZZ9876 verkauft werden. Es ermöglicht einen größeren Zugang zu den Städten durch das Netz einer bestimmten Fluggesellschaft, ohne zusätzliche Flüge anbieten zu müssen, und macht Verbindungen einfacher, indem sie einzelne Buchungen über mehrere Flugzeuge hinweg zulassen. Die meisten großen Fluggesellschaften haben heute Code-Sharing-Partnerschaften mit anderen Fluggesellschaften und Code-Sharing ist ein wichtiges Merkmal der großen Airline-Allianzen. Im Rahmen einer Code-Sharing-Vereinbarung wird die Fluggesellschaft, die tatsächlich den Flug betreibt, als Betreiber bezeichnet. Das Unternehmen oder die Unternehmen, die Tickets für diesen Flug verkaufen, aber nicht wirklich betreiben, werden als Marketing-Carrier bezeichnet.
