In der Biologie ist die Koevolution "die Veränderung eines biologischen Objekts, das durch die Veränderung eines verwandten Objekts ausgelöst wird". Die Koevolution verschiedener Arten umfasst die Evolution einer Wirtsart und ihrer Parasiten und Beispiele für den durch die Zeit sich entwickelnden Mutualismus. Evolution in Reaktion auf abiotische Faktoren wie Klimawandel ist keine biologische Koevolution. Die allgemeine Schlussfolgerung ist, dass die Koevolution für einen Großteil der genetischen Vielfalt verantwortlich sein kann, die in normalen Populationen beobachtet wird, darunter: Blutplasma-Polymorphismus, Protein-Polymorphismus, Histokompatibilitätssysteme usw. Es gibt wenig Hinweise auf eine Koevolution, die große Veränderungen in der Erdgeschichte antreibt, da abiotisch Faktoren wie Massenaussterben und Expansion in Ecospace scheinen die Verschiebungen in der Fülle der großen Gruppen zu führen.
