Kolloid
Ein Kolloid ist eine Substanz, die mikroskopisch in einer anderen Substanz dispergiert ist. Die Dispersionsphasenpartikel haben einen Durchmesser zwischen etwa 1 und 1000 Nanometern. Solche Partikel sind normalerweise leicht in einem optischen Mikroskop sichtbar, obwohl im kleineren Größenbereich ein Ultramikroskop oder ein Elektronenmikroskop erforderlich sein kann. Homogene Gemische mit einer dispergierten Phase in diesem Größenbereich können kolloidale Aerosole, kolloidale Emulsionen, kolloidale Schäume, kolloidale Dispersionen oder Hydrosole genannt werden. Die Partikel oder Tröpfchen der dispergierten Phase sind weitgehend von der im Kolloid vorhandenen Oberflächenchemie betroffen. Einige Kolloide sind durchsichtig, weil der Tyndall-Effekt, die die Streuung von Licht durch Partikel im Kolloid ist. Andere Kolloide können undurchsichtig sein oder eine leichte Farbe haben. Kolloidale Suspensionen sind Gegenstand der Schnittstelle und der Kolloidwissenschaft. Dieses Fachgebiet wurde 1861 vom schottischen Wissenschaftler Thomas Graham eingeführt.
