In der Farbwissenschaft sind die dominante Wellenlänge und die komplementäre Wellenlänge die Möglichkeit, nicht-spektrale Lichtmischungen in Bezug auf das Spektrallicht zu beschreiben, das eine identische Farbwahrnehmung hervorruft. Auf dem CIE-Farbkoordinatenraum kann eine gerade Linie zwischen dem Punkt für eine gegebene Farbe und dem Punkt für die Farbe des Leuchtmittels extrapoliert werden, so dass er den Umfang des Raumes in zwei Punkten schneidet. Der Schnittpunkt, der näher an der fraglichen Farbe liegt, zeigt die dominante Wellenlänge der Farbe als die Wellenlänge der reinen Spektralfarbe an diesem Schnittpunkt. Der Schnittpunkt auf der gegenüberliegenden Seite des Farbraums ergibt die komplementäre Wellenlänge, die, wenn sie der betreffenden Farbe in der richtigen Proportion hinzugefügt wird, die Farbe des Leuchtmittels ergibt. In Situationen, in denen kein bestimmter Leuchtmittel spezifiziert ist, ist es üblich, die dominante Wellenlänge in Bezug auf einige Standard-Leuchtmittel, wie flaches Spektrum weißes Licht zu diskutieren.
