Kartenprojektion
Häufig ist eine Kartenprojektion eine systematische Umwandlung der Breiten und Längengrade der Orte auf der Oberfläche einer Kugel oder eines Ellipsoids in Orte in einer Ebene. Für die Erstellung von Karten sind Kartenprojektionen erforderlich. Alle Kartenprojektionen verzerren die Oberfläche in gewisser Weise. Je nach dem Zweck der Karte sind einige Verzerrungen akzeptabel und andere sind nicht; Daher existieren unterschiedliche Kartenprojektionen, um einige Eigenschaften des kugelähnlichen Körpers auf Kosten anderer Eigenschaften zu bewahren. Es gibt keine Begrenzung für die Anzahl der möglichen Kartenprojektionen. Im allgemeinen können die Oberflächen von Planetenkörpern auch dann abgebildet werden, wenn sie zu unregelmäßig sind, um mit einer Kugel oder einem Ellipsoid gut modelliert zu werden; siehe unten.
